The YN-E3-RT speedlite transmitter is a direct replacement for the Canon ST-E3-RT and works as a remote wireless controller for ETTL radio controlled speedlites. It can control up to 5 flash groups with 3 flashes per group in full ETTL auto mode and manual mode and has several notable extra features over the Canon counterpart:

  • Adds AF Focus Assist light
  • Retains 2nd curtain sync (in manual mode)
  • Supports 5-group mode with pre-2012 EOS cameras
  • Full sync speed is maintained with pre-2012 EOS cameras
  • Will work with non-Canon cameras (in manual mode)
  • Has USB port for firmware updates

The Yongnuo YN-E3-RT controller is intended to perform and expand the functions of the Canon radio wireless flash control system and if you already own an original Canon flash model 600EX-RT, 600EX-RT II or 430EX III-RT, the YN-E3-RT is the cheapest and most convenient tool to put your lights to best use as off-camera flashes.

However if you are yet at the planning stage of equipping yourself with a set of ETTL-compatible, radio controlled speedlites, you should know that Yongnuo's own TTL remote control system  — the YN622 — offers a very similar feature set at a much lower overall cost due to the cheaper transmitter (YN622C-TX), flashes with built-in receiver (YN685EX/C) and receiver modules for existing flashes (YN622C-II).
