Yongnuo YN658EX/N is a top-class speedlight compatible with Nikon i-TTL, capable of providing big output (GN 60) and long throw (200 mm zoom). The YN685 can be operated in i-TTL auto and Manual modes, as well as in stroboscopic (MULTI) mode and via light impulse from another flash (S1/S2). The YN685 has all extra features present in high-end Nikon flashes such as FEL, FEB, FEC, 1st/2nd curtain sync and HSS (Hi-Speed Sync) at up to 1/8000s.
The power output of the YN685EX is adjustable between 1/1 and 1/128 (7 EV) at 1/3 EV increments. The motorized zoom head covers a focal range of 20 to 200 mm (relative to 1.5× crop), or down to 14 mm using the built-in disperser. Recovery aftert full discharge is approx. 2 seconds and can be further reduced by attaching an external battery pack via the available HV port.
The traditional segmented LCD display used on previous TTL-compatible Yongnuo flashes has been replaced with a raster screen that can output a large range of graphics. As a result of this change, the YN685 can adapt the screen contents based on the selected operating mode, and provide the required information via large and readable text and graphic elements.
The hot shoe locking mechanism now has a locking mechanism and provides protection from dust and water drops. The power on button already has 3 positions; between the standard ON and OFF modes there is a third locked mode in which the buttons on the back of the flash are locked to avoid an incidental change of settings.
The flash allows updating flashing the firmware but requires an YN622-II wireless trigger for data transfer.
A unique feature of the Yongnuo YN685EX/N is the built-in radio receiver that is compatible with both Yongnuo remote triggering systems: the manual RF602/603/605/560TX and the iTTL-based YN622. The YN685 can also be controlled in wireless optical mode from a commander light. It supports both Conan and Nikon CLS command protocols.
